“A colleague helped me to change the lilacs-picture to 1000 pixels in png, and that seems to have helped. I then tried to change the CC-scetches to 1000 pixels wide in png, and that looked a bit better readable than in jpg, but those wouldn’t upload. Mostly when it doesn’t upload I get a warning that there are too many pixels (1200 across is too much, even if the file is quite small), but the CC2 and CC3 png-pages didn’t trigger any warning, they just made my gallery page stay blank, and then weren’t uploaded. So I’m sorry but those remain very badly readable.”

J: Actually, they’re just fine. I see what you’re saying and it’s very much what I have in mind as well. For “snapshot quality sharing” which is the goal of the plugin, the 1000 pixel size works okay. For sharing real detail work, I think the only thing you can do is take a sample selection off a more detailed image and post just that selection to give an idea.

H: “Also, about this blog-site: at the top right some things are showing not quite the way I think you intended:
- the important notice has 4 list-spots in front of it’s lines (1 at the beginning, and 1 in front of ‘Copyright’, ‘noted’ and ‘Thanks’), and those lines come down across the Blog101 an Links-items in the menu-tabs below it.
- The menu-tab ‘Your galleries’ is half-hidden behind the ‘Log in’ header.”

J: This is a cipher. I’ve tested this blog on several different computers with both Firefox and Explorer, and all show properly. (Except for the bullets. That has something to do with the php file I messed with to get the disclaimer in. It has to do with the format of the hot links that are in the same area. It was the only way I could see to get that copyright info up front and on every page, and I didn’t want to mess with what the designer had done for those hot links.) As for the “overflow”, the only way I could reproduce that on my on machine was by doing a text zoom. The images which form the borders are a fixed size and are set to work with a font of a given size. Changing the font size only will disrupt that balance. I can only assume some themes automatically scale the borders with the text size. This one doesn’t, but I still just love the look.

Oh…I should ask: What browser are you using?

H: “And a question: when I’m logged in, I have sometimes seen a list of subscribers that I can click on to view their galleries, but it doesn’t consistently show up when I’m in the ‘Your galleries’ page, and I’m wondering how I can always get to that list?”

J: The list of subscribers actually resides in “the Pub.” That’s the “subscribers only” page. You’ll notice that when you click on a person to go view their pics, that also takes you to the Pub. That’s how the plugin keeps non-subscribers from accessing subscriber information.

Health update: doing pretty well, just can’t seem to stay awake. Don’t think we’ll be growing snouts and tails any time soon. Prolly just a little bug we picked up. Thanks for the good thoughts!

OSG said something last night that kind of took me by surprise. She said rather than long posts, I need to post smaller and more often. But, thought I, I’ve been posting just about every day. What’s she talking about. Then, I looked at the calendar and realized that between getting ready for the convention, going to the convention and then getting sick, it had been a long time between posts. I’ll try to do better.

I didn’t get as much reading done yesterday as I’d like. We ended up going in search of rock, and wound up getting a very good deal on some really pretty rainbow river rock. Read the rest of this entry »

Quick update: I’ve fixed the problem of disappearing Gravatars and Wavatars. If you have a Gravatar,  an image from your uploaded gallery will no longer supercede it. The downside is, you can’t supercede it, but if you really want to change your avatar, just change it at Gravatar.

The same change brought back the Wavatars. Yippee! The downside is, this plugin really wants to give you an avatar, so if you upload an image, it will be your avatar, like it or not. So…if you want to keep your wavatar, make sure you right click and save it before uploading any pictures, then upload it to your gallery and choose it as your avatar. I’d suggest doing it in the Pub, since those are bigger images.

At least, I think this will work…going to check out this theory….

Well…saving the image worked. OTOH…er…those who have tried to supercede the wavatar with an uploaded image are now back to the wavatars. ARGH!!!!!! I’ve got to figure how to fix this. ..

Phooey…going back to the way it was. I’ve saved down the wavatars for everyone who still had them and put them in as default avatars for those who remain anonymous. If you’d rather have the Captain default image, just go into your gallery and delete the wavatar. If you have a wavatar and want a different avatar, for right now you’ll have to upload an avatar to your gallery. And if you have a Gravatar and want to upload other images into your gallery, you’ll need to make your gravatar image one of your images.

dizzyAre we having fun yet?

Hang in there, folks. We’ll make this work!

I’m trying a new plugin. “The Pub” should be available to all registered users. There’s nothing there right now except a listing of the registered users, but it should eventually provide a “conversation pit” for all you lovely folk. (This isn’t a live chat, just threaded messaging that’s semi-private.) Mainly, it gives the option of choosing your own avatar, uploading some pictures to share (not a lot, this isn’t flickr or anything like that) and in general giving the site a few more options.

To load an avatar, go to your dashboard (the page that comes up when you log in) and check out the user options on the left hand side bar. One is your Profile, where you can change your password and such, and one is your Gallery. Go to the gallery, upload the image you want to use for your avatar and it will give you the option to choose it as your avatar.

For those who have grown fond of their wavatars, I’ve got a query to the plugin designer to find out how to get those back. They aren’t lost, merely hiding. The Wavatar is somehow linked to your email. I’ve got a query to the wavatar designer to find out if the wavatar dice can be rerolled.

Time to go skate. More later.

Answer on the Wavatar…no, it can’t be changed. It’s actually determined by the email itself. I’m not quite sure I understand correctly, but I think that certain elements are linked to certain features…like “em” in the email might equate to “green” and “it” might correspond to “round glasses.” It’s really extremely clever!

I’m still working on getting the default to be your wavatar. Meantime, I’m going to go make a much more interesting default. Maybe load some default options and see if I can make it so you can choose one.

Off to play with avatars…

Quick question for y’all. There’s a plugin for WordPress that would make this site a member of Google Friend Connect. Not sure what all this does, but it seems to up the interactive quotient. Any opinions?

http://www.google.com/friendconnect/

Okay…Carolyn’s convinced me that it’s a good idea to have folks log in. It means you only have to login once, then you can comment to your heart’s content. In theory, this means I hear more from all of you, which sounds good to me. frolic

I don’t know what this will do to those already cleared for posting, but I’ll try to stay on it so you get approved real fast! I don’t think this will fix the avatar problem, but who knows?

Update: the good news is, the site remembers you and you don’t have to wait for me to approve another post.

tearrunThe bad news is, the site remembers you and I fear that means you’re stuck with your generated avatar.

hmmSorry. The only way I know for you to get that avatar is to get a second gravatar using another email (does anyone have just one anymore?), then come back and sign up using that email. I’m still trying to find a way to reset avatars, but I don’t have a lot of hope. I’ve spent quite a bit of time researching the problem and so far, nothing…other than other people asking the same question.

sigh

Note….I actually began this on Wednesday. My how time flies. But when I went up Wednesday evening to finish and post, the site was sllllooooowwww. Suffice to say,  I didn’t get it finished.  Anyway, I guess I’ll just let it ride.

Much, much better this morning. (And the crowd goes wild.) I feared I wouldn’t be able to move, but I guess the stretching involved in the gardening and especially the digging of The Hole did the trick. So…It’s off to the rink today. starry

We had breakfast on the patio this morning. It was glorious. A pleasant wind (too strong to constitute a breeze) kept the trees moving. The cypress is wonderful. It’s got all these oddly twisting branches that catch every air current making it extremely animated. I’m so glad we got it!

shrugI have a few minutes to work before we head for the rink, so it’s back to sorting files on the Big Drive. I keep telling myself, just a little each day. Eventually it will get done. But then there’s the listing of the library on Library Thing (a little each day) the gardening (a little each day) and the Closed Circle business (a little each day)…Oh, and housework (a little each day…) Hmmm…(closes eyes and places fingertips on forehead) I believe I’m getting a clue for the title of this post.

I finally got my room window open more than a couple of inches so I could really hear the pond. Good old soap on the frame. Does the trick every time…at least if you’re dealing with older wood-framed windows. They’re really pretty, but compared to modern aluminum framed windows, they’re heavy and difficult to lift. To add to the problem, I have a beautiful oriental chest right under the window, topped with my black cat plushy collection. (They reside there until the Halloween season, when they  invade the rest of the house.) Getting an angle on the window creates another of those awkward gymnastic moments.

bedroom-window1Just went and took a picture. The blond fellow sitting on PhatKhat’s lap is Wesley. The little pink-hair plushy at the bottom right is Shuuichi, and the one in the pink bunny outfit to the left is Ryuichi. Train AKA Black Cat is the white-faced plushy in between them. (And so, I slickly begin to  insert my interest in manga/anime…are you impressed? What I really really really want are Saiyuki plushies. Now those would be fun!)

But…I’m wasting time. Must go sort files. Nice brainless activity to fill a spare few minutes. So much more productive than playing Spider Solitaire. Is anyone else addicted to that game? My preference is the medium, two suit, difficulty. Hard is boring…way too hard to win, and so is easy. Way too easy to win. It’s a wicked game, because every one of them can be won, therefore, I must continue to play a given game until  I win. Supreme waste of time….

Skating was, um, brief. We got there late, and the nicest skating mom you’ll ever meet was there. She brings her autistic son, who absolutely loves skating (and is really very amazingly accomplished) several days a week. Her husband brought him last week and I was concerned that she’d been ill, so I stopped to make sure she was OK. Well, she’s a real reader, one thing led to another, and I was, shall we say, tardy in getting on the ice. I no more than got on and was warming up my recalcitrant feet (a major process) then everyone else was getting off! Wah! The session still had about twenty minutes to go, but I really don’t like skating alone. One of the hardest falls I ever took knocked me cold for several seconds and there was nobody else out there. Fortunately, it was only a few seconds and I got off in one piece, but it brought hjapanesemaplesome the potential dangers of skating solo. So…I got off, too.

And then, we went plant hunting. We planned to go after the pretty star magnolia at Lowe’s, but…we found something we wanted much more. Some beautiful Japanese Maples. One flaming red/orange, which will grow to about 15 feet, and the other a luscious spring green that will stay about 41/2 by 41/2.  (See photo) Naturally, when we got home, I began digging. The red one, as you see, is on the near end (the pic is taken from the back doorway) and the green is off to the right.

I placed a bunch more rocks, then attacked The Tangle Beneath The Hawthorne. I’ve tried for two years now to salvage the ivy bed, but the grass has just embedded itself thoroughly…So I began stripping and sifting roots. Several hours later, I had a pile on the concrete and about a square yard cleared. Glug! Blow torches are now being considered….

When I finally came in and showered and sat down to finish this post…the site was pretty much ice aged. Took forever just to change screens and the display lagged behind what I was typing by about three words. I decided it wasn’t worth it and began doing some more file sorting while we watched Bleach.

I think it’s time to investigate an offline blogging software….

overwhelmedI’ve been working and working on this expletive deleted theme, trying to figure out why (a) avatars aren’t working.  (b) How to adjust type size so you can read it. (c) how to get the comments to thread. Read the rest of this entry »

Got back to skating today! YAY! Felt good to be back on the ice.

A new page has been added! It’s not much, just something of a Blogging FAQ page but it might be useful to some of you. Basically, I’m finding out bits and pieces regarding blogs in general and WordPress (the ”software” on which this blog is built)  in particular that others might find useful as well. Hmmmm….we’ve decided we don’t like the result with the full screen on the reduced sized images (I took them all down to 500 pixels, max) We’re going to try putting them up on Flickr full size. I do not know what this will do to slower download computers! I’m going to leave these as is, put up the next lot at full size, then run a survey (I assume I can find a widget for that) as to what size to make them. Please please please vote!
