Mass Extinction in the Pub!

Monday, January 11th, 2010

I’m very sorry if I zapped legitimate members, but I’m trying to clean up the ranks. Considering the problems I’ve been having, I’d say it’s about time, no? Anyway, I’m going after “suspicious” emails and user names, but suspicious is sort of in the eye of the beholder, no? so if I take you out by mistake, please understand, it’s nothing personal, just a desperate attempt to clean up the site. (Sort of like closing the gate after the horses are out, isn’t it? Ah, well. Anyway, sorry for any inconvenience this causes.

Sparkleplenty passed the acid test.

Stevie’s Sparkleplenty, my new computer, runs Might and Magic 6! (And the crowd goes wild.) This insidious little computer game is the game that finally yanked me, kicking and screaming, into the world of computer games. None of the versions before or after have what it has, and I think I’ve played about a million games now. When I really need to relax, I just go shoot goblins or Baaaa fanatics! It’s a great game.

And I didn’t even have to do a backwards compatibility! I did on XP.

Even better…well, I don’t know about that, but equally delightful, they’ve made a significant change to Spider solitaire. And I don’t mean the dumb glowing cards, which drive me nuts.

You can endlessly “undo” all the way back to the beginning!!!!!!! for the chronic “completist” this is mana from heaven. This means, at this point, I’ve played 25 games and have a win percentage of…get this…100!

Zippitee do dah!

By a Hewlett Packard. And it’s sooooo cute! It was a quick ship and a much better deal than the same machine custom built. It’s a lot of machine for under $1000.00.

Taking the plunge to rip into your laptop without anything resembling a manual, getting it back together with no extraneous parts… and discovering it didn’t change a thing. (more…)

…for new toys.

My USB woes actually took a fun turn. The usb failure on the mobo took out the USB ports on the front as well as the back. In order to operate, I really need front accessible ports, so I went hunting for options. Boy have USB hubs come a long way in the last (mumble-murph) years! (more…)

drinkI lost it today. I don’t often do that on the phone, but I got seriously angry at the oh-so-polite, oh-so-lying through his teeth customer non-service guy at Toshiba. (more…)

Computer update.

Good news and bad news. Cooling off did nothing. Attaching another monitor was successful, but it was an old monitor, not an lcd and I think the video card accesses it differently, so I’m not sure that tells us it’s all in the screen or cable. An attempt to find instructions for disassembling the Qosmio G15 were completely unsuccessful. The F15 is similar, but not enough, and since access to the cable requires a complete disassembly of the machine, I hit a point past which I was hesitant to go. So I haven’t been able to get at the video cable to see if it’s loose/compromised.

What makes me even more frustrated…in my attempts to find the above, I came across the information that what Toshiba told the stores back in 2006 was to give the customers the option of a replacement machine! The G15 and F15 had known mobo issues. The now defunct CompUSA just gave me a new board and wished me luck. The other mobo took out the screen, too. I’ve used this machine sparingly in the past couple of years because I wanted it for my graphics machine, and now, it’s dying again. Crud. Had CompUSA been ethical back when, I wouldn’t have these problems now.

Oh, well. I think next I’m going to Toshiba itself and see what I might be able to get from them, tho I doubt, after this long, that it’ll be anything, and I can’t blame them for that.

I think I need some more lime…drink

Thanks, everyone

Gomen kudasai

Gomen kudasai

Gomen, gomen, gomen. Of course I’m glad you were born. You’re my #1 son! You’re a brilliant, kind, wonderful, perfect individual. I wouldn’t change a thing about you.

(Now art thou happy, you spoiled—*MURPH*)

I truly do. But there are times I wish he’d never been “born.” He’s evidently seriously PO’d at me for working on everything except his story. I’ve had nothing but computer problems ever since I began working on the Closed Circle stuff. (more…)

Miscon: had a wonderful time…

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

…but feeling oh, so guilty. I fear Typhoid Mary and her minions may have infected the entire con.

Yes, for those who haven’t heard, CJ came down with some virus the day we left for the convention and spent pretty much the whole convention in the room,  face down in the beandip. Now, this isn’t quite as horrible as it might seem, as outside the window was a rushing stream whose sound permeated the room and inside were two kitties to keep her company, but still…this is not the way to “do” a convention, especially not one as friendly and relaxed as Miscon.

I did something like eight hours of programming on Saturday, filling in for her on panels and readings as well as my own.  (more…)
