Flying up from your backyard pond.

I’m just sick. Our fish have been freaked for days, hovering down at the deep end.  Not coming up to eat…We thought it was water chemistry. Have been doing water changes and all kinds of things…Today, I was working away in my room, caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of my eye…looked up and there was a gorgeous male bald eagle soaring away…with one of our beautiful koi in his clutches. We ran out, did a head count…and realized we’re missing both Banichi and Jago, our two beautiful black and reds.

I think we know now what happened to our glorious Yoruichi last fall. WAH!

Carolyn’s out setting up a scarecrow squirter, but I don’t think that’s going to help.  We put up the sunshade but I think we need to get more water plants…fast.

Poor fishies!!!!!

bichirItty-bitty baby bichirs! I have been looking for one of these for fifteen years, ever since I lost mine to a desire to go walkabout in the office down in OKC.  These are fresh water lung fish, sometimes called eels, but I don’t know that they actually are. Eels, that is. Fact is, I don’t know that much about them period. I just loved Sly. He was another fish that would eat out of my hand and let me pet him. Anyway, I found a site http://aquaticpredators.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=643 that has all kinds of info. I’m going there now to see what they recommend for care and feeding.

My two little guys are like the first one on the list (I think. They’re kinda small, but that looks like them.) My original Sly was like the third one. I’d still love to replace him someday, but I love the two little guys I got today. I’ll try to get pics, but they’re very small right now. (As you can see…I got one. Rested the camera on the counter and let it shoot. He was being very quiet.)

Ja ne!

Ja ne!

Sigh…just when I was ready to ditch the fresh water tank… Ah, well.

My darling little fish, for whom I’d gone to so much trouble…was MIA. Read the rest of this entry »

Saturday.

I have an appointment to meet Sharon and Joan for my first ever manicure/pedicure. This wasn’t just an indulgence, but another Necessity: My fingernails were an absolute mess from all the stuff I’d been doing outside, and I thought I’d go check the place out, because someone I know has feet which could use some serious TLC, and this someone doesn’t trust people to mess with said needy feet. Joan and Sharon had set this up and I decided to go with the gang and check it out.

It also meant getting up at the crack of, after getting to bed sometime between 2 and 3 am, because before manicures happened, I had to get the tank’s “extras” up and running, Read the rest of this entry »

to yesterday’s post.

I forgot to mention…you see, even tho it was hard to see Sharon leave (but then, it’s always hard when one of your best friends ever leaves) it was, in the end, a Very Good Thing. Remember the title: Necessity’s a Mother. If she hadn’t left, we’d have done it the same way Carolyn and I did it before, which, while it worked, still placed a dangerous strain on the main sump tank. This way, we now have it set up so the removal of the pump is both (relatively) simply and most importantly, gentle on the sump. So…

Thanks, Sharon, for leaving. It was meant to be.

Huggies!

Ja ne!

Ja ne!

Quick recap: took Carolyn to the airport, spent first day with plants and Joan, second day, went to Aquatic Dreams to get the RODI filter checked. Got home and began running water, with the idea of doing the water change before Carolyn got home, so it would be one less thing on her mind. Maybe do a little tank cleaning while I had the water level down.

Couple of little details I forgot to mention. I took the pump Carolyn said didn’t work, which I thought I had fixed earlier this summer, to AD to see if it really was dead…naturally, it worked just fine when he powered it up. Don’t ask me, but I don’t look gift horses, etc. And it’s worked fine since…which becomes significant. The other thing, and the one that probably prompted my notion to do the water change before Carolyn came back, was the presence of an adorable, plump tail-spot blenny at the store. Now, this is one of our favorite fishies, and we lost our previous one…we think to the murderous pistol shrimp. We hadn’t been able to get a replacement for over a year, so I didn’t want to let this one get away. Read the rest of this entry »

Was going to get into the Real Story of the Fish Tank, but Real Life interfered…in a very nice way. We went to a local pond/fish outlet today looking for the snow viewing lantern we want and…they had platinum butterfly fins! We brought home a Maddy! Unfortunately, Carolyn started putting her in before I had the camera ready, and the camera was low on batteries, so I didn’t really get much in the way of pictures, but at least you all can meet her: Read the rest of this entry »

By a Hewlett Packard. And it’s sooooo cute! It was a quick ship and a much better deal than the same machine custom built. It’s a lot of machine for under $1000.00.

…as if they’re easy to get! Hah! and again, I say, Hah! These guys are fast and small. I need to use my zoom lens, set the focus…and hope. Sheesh. Read the rest of this entry »

…but feeling oh, so guilty. I fear Typhoid Mary and her minions may have infected the entire con.

Yes, for those who haven’t heard, CJ came down with some virus the day we left for the convention and spent pretty much the whole convention in the room,  face down in the beandip. Now, this isn’t quite as horrible as it might seem, as outside the window was a rushing stream whose sound permeated the room and inside were two kitties to keep her company, but still…this is not the way to “do” a convention, especially not one as friendly and relaxed as Miscon.

I did something like eight hours of programming on Saturday, filling in for her on panels and readings as well as my own.  Read the rest of this entry »
