I screwed up that explanation this image is what the site should have looked like before. Note the difference in opacity between the body and the header and menu tabs:

This is what some people were seeing after I upgraded the theme:

Note the absent transparency in the body.

This is what it looks like now, with the solid background (lilac), which should work on everyone’s computers:

What I need to know from the people who are saying it was really dark this morning…like the middle one. Is that a change from, say, last week? I think the theme guy has screwed up the program and I need to let him know that.

Thanks!

What I see looks like the bottom one. I figured out why I wasn’t seeing the blue on the sides…my “View” was zoomed-in! Am using Windows with updated Firefox.

    Hmmm…I wonder what else I’ve been missing…?

  2. avatar Hanneke says:

I used to get the top image, both in Firefox and in Internet Explorer 7.
Yesterday, after your update & repair of the errors, I got the second image (in IE), but with the drop-down menu-items at the top also on the dark background, without the lighter transparancy.
Now I see the bottom image (in IE): that’s very legible and looks nice.
So that means the transparancy was originally visible in IE, before the update.

Also, at the bottom of the page, the copyright text is now (pale) lilac on the green background, and almost completely unreadable as these colours seem very similar in darkness.

  4. avatar joekc6nlx says:

I have the same as Hanneke. I know there’s a copyright statement at the bottom because I’ve seen it before, but now, it’s practically invisible.

BTW, my poor eyes are straining hard to read the blue on purple background of the posters’ names, the dates and times they posted, and the only way to get the name is to mouse over and look at the hyperlink that Firefox puts at the bottom of the page.

Do I need to change something in MY settings?

  5. avatar tulrose says:

I have the same problem Joe. And Jane, this is why I don’t generally follow your blog. The very dark colours just blur together in that tiny font. Also, on the CC page, the green at the top cuts out half-way down. I never run any web page in full screen mode so that’s why I’m not seeing the side green bars. I don’t think they should disappear though. Shouldn’t the whole page just squish in?

  6. avatar Jane says:

Okay, guys…I’ve been trying to do something about blue. Like I say, I’ve gone in and changed every font color setting I can find in the expletive deleted theme and it hasn’t fixed it. When I have time, I’ll try again to find the problem. Also, I’ll see if I can’t bump up the size of the type. These things are hidden deep in the codes, but last night Lynn put me onto a gizmo that’s supposed to help me track down the controls. I just got distracted by the more significant problems over on CC. I’ll go check the color of the copyright notice. Just didn’t get around to it yesterday.

  7. avatar tulrose says:

Hey, text is bigger, thank God. But that bright blue for my name and time of post just bleeds. The letters run into each other. It’s getting there.

  8. avatar tulrose says:

Jane, you don’t have any link from FantasticFiction.co.uk back to either your website or CC. When you get a minute, contact them.

    • avatar Jane says:

Uh…ok. I guess I’d better go see who you’re talking about! (I’m sooo ignorant)

I think Sabina is right. I think the blue is default. I’m going to try and stick some of my own code in there. Keep your fingers crossed!

  9. avatar Sabina says:

It’s seems like the classes fn, commentmetadata or comment-meta aren’t defined, so the browser falls back on the default colors for links which is usually blue and purple.
fn controls the name, commentmetadata and comment-meta control the time under them name.

Jane-dear, we know you’re trying to get things right. You asked for input, and I certainly am NOT giving you criticism. Your webbuilding skills are way above me. I don’t understand a lot of the stuff I’m doing when I add to our website for my kendo club. I just don’t have the patience to sit there and work on things like that for hours on end. I have done it, but I hated every minute of it and when I was finished, I had a small one-person celebration with an appropriate adult beverage.

I’m sure that you and/or Lynn will find the controls and get them fixed. In the meantime, I’ll just squint myopically.

Thank Prime! I can live with the pale purple background on the main page (it’s legible!), although I agree that if you can get it working, the aqua is preferable. I think the blue for name and time stamp on posts is too tonally close to the dark purple background, which makes people’s eyes hate it, but I’ll cope while you hammer more important things. Otherwise, much better.

    • avatar chondrite says:

Oh! My PERSONAL post date stamp is showing up as red, which is much more visible than the blue. Can you steal the code to use the red for everyone else’s posts, and the eye-hating blue for one’s own?

  12. avatar Sabina says:

@joekc6nlx: try looking into your browser options, some have an option for enforcing a minimum font size.

Font sizes are a difficult thing, ideally one wouldn’t hardcode them and just use relative ones (em, %), so the browser will use it’s default size, but than you have to have users who know about default font sizes and set them accordingly.

  13. avatar joekc6nlx says:

@Sabina, I understand about font sizes and how to change them. I’ve noticed according to Firefox, these pages are encoded in Unicode (UTF-8), but Firefox defaults to Western. I changed the default coding to UTF-8 and have detected very little change. I also did increase my minimum font size to 18 points for both proportional and monospace fonts.

  14. avatar Jane says:

Mischief managed! Larger type and nice bright message info. Are we all happy now?

  15. avatar Sabina says:

No, it’s human nature never to be happy. ;)

  16. avatar tulrose says:

    Hey, actually readable! Many thanks.

  17. avatar smartcat says:

On CC I have nothing above the drop down menu. Do I *need* any of this? The background looks like the third image. All is easy to read. I now have all the copywrite/legal info at the bottom of the page. Everything opens like it should. Your colors on C&L are much better, easier to read, no florescing between the colors.

  18. avatar Jane says:

The images are my entire screen including all the firefox menus. The dropdown menu is at the very top of the page, so I think you’re cool! :D

  19. This blog:
Larger font + new readable green color = Happy, happy OSG!

  20. avatar smartcat says:

All is looking VERY COOL now! And I   the bubble background and the Bermuda Green (it’s a potter’s color) names and dates….easy to read and pretty!

Thanks for putting up with all the grief we give you. Now we can all grumble until you take a break!

Okay!!!! I’m back at the color problem in my pics. I think a lot comes down to this machine combined with PSP…which it came with as a selling point! Toooo crazy.
