ToCs: to do or not to do, the burning question of the day

February 7th, 2010

I’m working on a table of contents for Ring of Lightning. If it works, I’ll probably (sigh) go in and construct one for my other books. I’m also trying to figure how to create the book as one HTML file. I’ve learned some new code in the process, like how to force a page break in HTML…which might make format conversion easier in the long run. We’ll see how that translates to mobi, et al tomorrow.

See…I’m trying to do good by youse guys!

I’d appreciate it, especially if the table of contents can hyperlink to the chapters.
I’m reading Groundties at the moment (Stephen has just met the ‘horses’/ko’sii) and enjoying it; didn’t want to stop reading but it’s past my bedtime already.
Because I’m reading it on two different devices the device doesn’t remember where I am, and I have to scroll: a table of content with links to the chapters and sections would be helpful. I can generally remember the chapter I’ve gotten to, but the repeating numbers of parts of sections is a bit confusing to track, especially when scrolling fast.
Something else: I just finished Monet’s picture of the Japanese bridge over the waterlily pond, and I’ll try to send it off sometime soon (I have to get a box that’s the right size for it). They say sending packages to the USA takes about 10 days, so you should get it before the end of the month.

It will have links. (She says determinedly.) :D

Oooo…how exciting. I can’t wait. Isn’t it going to be awfully expensive to ship, tho? When we talked about it, it hadn’t registered to me just where you were sending it from!!!!! If it’s crazy-expensive, please don’t feel obligated!!!! I appreciate just the thought.

No, it fits in a standard-sized box so postage will be about the same as for the Gates of Ivrel graphic novels.
I´m glad it´s going to a good home, as nobody in the family has room for it on their walls, or it doesn´t fit in their colour scheme. If it doesn´t fit anywhere in your house, just hand it on to someone who can place it, or put it up in the next garage-sale.
I think you’re right about not letting people put book reviews on your own site, it causes a lot of work and it’s not that necessary, if you’ve got a small synopsis of the books on the site already. If in the end you really want to add something like that, maybe you could quote one or two of the best reviews from other sites: “On Amazon.com, S.Smythe says this about Ring of Destiny: …”, ” On LibraryThing, mrs.X reviewed Groundties as follows: …”. I’m sure the reviewers wouldn’t mind being quoted if they’re correctly attributed (definitely not, if those reviews are made by people who also read these blogs and comment that they’ve posted a review somewhere).
I’m really enjoying Groundties, lost some sleep last night because I couldn’t stop reading. I’ve found that reading on the computer it takes me a bit longer to get into the story than curled up with a book, but once I was in the discomforts just get ignored, as well as dinnertime, bedtime and other unimportant extraneous distractions, same as with a good new paper book. The story is exiting, the character development is interesting, the glimpses we get into Stephen’s background poignant, there are hints about much broader issues and troubles than I’ve seen so far and that makes me very interested in how everything is going to develop. I’m not quite as fascinated by the Wesser yet as a lot of people seem to be, but I haven’t seen much of him yet… I’m going to stop answering this and read some more.
