By a Hewlett Packard. And it’s sooooo cute! It was a quick ship and a much better deal than the same machine custom built. It’s a lot of machine for under $1000.00.

That funky litte design on the upper right of the screen is an analog clock! I love it.

Even better, it’s designed for doing art. A lovely screen, 4GB ram, and a Radeon video card with a gig of dedicated ram, two gig available. Maybe not as powerful as a game designer would want, but for my covers, it s/b great. It also came with Paint Shop Pro installed, which I’ve never seen before.

I’ve only just gotten it up and running and right now it’s making its own recovery disks, so I haven’t gotten to play much with it…yet,  the feel is great.

It’s a nice size, a little wider than my dell, with a full-sized keyboard…full numeric pad, which I like…especially when playing Might and Magic! Of course, I don’t know yet if I can play M&M on this machine. It’s got a large battery…12cell…and despite the weight, I really like it. It adds just a bit of height to the back side of the machine, so when I work with it on my lap, it makes the balance really nice. I tend to press down on the front of the machine with my wrists. Not good. I don’t have the inclination to do it on this machine.

Vista is okay so far, tho if I didn’t love the theme that comes with this, I’d be pretty upset. There doesn’t seem to be an obvious way to design your own theme/colors, though you can still customize sounds and cursors and such.

Lessee…other than that, got a bit of cleanup work done outside, moved some more dirt…same old same old.

Thanks for visiting!

Oh…wait, I promised pix of fishies: Fishies

And another: more fishies

Hard to tell sizes. Shall we say, they used to have a major task taking in a single food pellet. Now, they gobble them down three and four at a time. :D

Oop! Time to change disks. One more to go. Then I get to start customizing. Yay!

Ja ne!

Ja ne!

  1. Enjoyed the post and the pictures. CJ mentioned your “house troll” and it sounds fascinating; might we get a picture sometime? Or is he (it?) too shy?

  2. SQUEEEE!!

    Love your new compy, Jane!

It really should belong to Carolyn. Got a real wave without a shore theme. But it’s MINE! Tee hee.

I’ll let you play with it next time you’re over. You’re skating right now (she says, looking at the little curly-cue clock) so I guess that won’t be today!

Hope the learning curve on the PSP is not too bad.

    • avatar Jane says:

Oh, Paint Shop Pro is what I’ve used for years. I work a little with Photoshop, but PSP is a great little program. All the graphics programs are getting bloated with options, and the newest PSP is no exception. I’ll probably end up putting an earlier version on as well, but I didn’t have this newest one, though I’ve played with it a bit, so I’m glad to get it.

    Woohoo! :-)
Jane, I suggest that once you have this configged how you want it, you take a disk image so that if a future rebuild is needed, you can go to that config essentially right away, instead of having to customize again from the new-built config.

Good idea. I’ve done that in the past with my desktops, but it’s been harder with the laptops. I, however, have a terabyte drive now! I have room for everything! :w00t:

Hmmm…wonder if there’s anything natively on this machine to image it…oh wait! I’ve got a program I’ve never used in the office that will. I’m covered!

      • avatar Jcrow9 says:

Jane, look in Accessories–>System Tools. One of the backup options is “Complete PC Backup.” I think this should do it, tho with my system I am using Nortob Ghost.

Ah! Thanks. I have Acronis True Image. Never even put it on the computer I got it for. I think I’ll try it out on this one. But it’s nice to know they’ve got that option actually in Windows now.

I just upgraded to Vista myself. So far… I like it. If you take the trouble to customize it, Vista is a marvelous OS. Oh, and if you get tired of those annoying “Are you sure?” messages that pop up, type msconfig in the search bar(love the search bar) and hit enter. Say “Yes” when it asks if you are sure. Then click the “tools” tab and scroll down to “Disable UAC” and click on it, then launch. Hope this helps!

    • avatar Jane says:

Thank you! Glad to know they haven’t done away with MSCONFIG. That’s one of my favorite programs. And, yes, I’m annoyed with them. Why on earth don’t they have an easier way to turn them off?

I’m still trying to figure how they’ve got the disk organized. I’d always put everything into levels of folders in My Docs so I only had to backup the one folder. Ah, well. I’ll figure it out.

You’re welcome! I know how annoying those things can be.

I guess I’m lucky. I already had everything set up in the same format when I had XP, except that is was all under documents. I like this setup, in some ways, more. Although the back up thing can get annoying, but that’s what windows back-up and restore is for, right?

    • avatar Jane says:

Yeah. So did I, so as I’ve begun to use it, it’s quickly making sense. And you make a good point. I’ve got to seriously investigate Windows BU. It looks like it’s quite powerful in this.

That looks great Jane! I hope you’ll be very happy with it :)

So far, it’s a thumbs up. I am a bit dismayed with a problem encountered in one of the M&M crawls. Hoping a reinstall will fix it. I actually love the white keyboard. Feared it would be distracting, but it’s not and it’s got a great touch. I also like the full keyboard. When I’m inputing numbers, I love a true ten-key. It’s like the old AT keyboards, which I had back with my first machines and I’ve always prefered it.

Oh…it also makes flying in M&M easier.

  8. avatar Wayspooled says:

Oh, and if and when y’all decide to go to Windows 7, here’s what I thought was a good write up of the various versions we speculate MS will offer. http://windowssecrets.com/comp/090716/#story1

    • avatar Jane says:

Oooo…thanks for this! The free upgrade is only to the same edition which the machine came with and this one came with the home edition. The backwards compatibility that seems to come only with pro has me a bit concerned, but vista didn’t need that with M&M, so maybe Win7 won’t either. OTOH…a complete image of the machine before upgrading will be in order!!!!

er.. when I say “we”.. I don’t have anything to do with that site or author heh..
