UpLink, this time. The history of this cover is a long and sometimes horrifying one…

hmmHmmm…there doesn’t appear to be bookmarks on this page. I’m going to have to rectify that. Ah, well, just follow the link and scroll down to “A Question of Covers” in big yellow letters. I’ll get the bookmarks up later.

Anyway, I really really really wanted the computer kachina with Nayati in the caves; instead, I got the melting face bwahahafrom hell. So…I had a lot of pressure on me from the peanut gallery to get this one right. (slideshow:) Read the rest of this entry »

…a celebration of a life.

Most of you probably already know, Carolyn’s mom passed away yesterday afternoon. It was very quiet, very peaceful…she was ready and so were the family.

Carolyn’s parents, Lois and Basil, were both wonderful individuals. I loved them both dearly. They were private folk, as is Carolyn, but I sure they’re happy knowing Carolyn has so many good, supportive thoughts flowing her direction.

I’m also certain those who were here last weekend for Shejicon realize now why CJ seemed a bit distracted at times. We knew this was coming and never knew, until Kim and Tracey left on Sunday night, whether that Call would come in the middle of the festivities. I’m very grateful that we had that gloriously full weekend right when we did. And Lois, with typical planning flair, waited until it was over to step on that bus she’d been waiting for.

Have fun taking care of those chickens, Lois! And say “Hi,” to Basil and give my folks a hug for me, OK?

Ja ne!

Ja ne!

Prince of Persia works on this machine! YAYAYAYAY I’d totally forgotten about it because Sands of Time didn’t work on the Toshi. It uses a weird backup thing that taxed the Toshi’s video card beyond its abilities. So…I did it without the backup…but it’s designed to use it and so it was hard to get through a given battle alive!

We got an XBox just so I could play the silly thing, and I never could quite get his tuck and roll timed right with those controls. I did pretty well with the PC, but we’ll see… Read the rest of this entry »

Stevie’s Sparkleplenty, my new computer, runs Might and Magic 6! (And the crowd goes wild.) This insidious little computer game is the game that finally yanked me, kicking and screaming, into the world of computer games. None of the versions before or after have what it has, and I think I’ve played about a million games now. When I really need to relax, I just go shoot goblins or Baaaa fanatics! It’s a great game.

And I didn’t even have to do a backwards compatibility! I did on XP.

Even better…well, I don’t know about that, but equally delightful, they’ve made a significant change to Spider solitaire. And I don’t mean the dumb glowing cards, which drive me nuts.

You can endlessly “undo” all the way back to the beginning!!!!!!! for the chronic “completist” this is mana from heaven. This means, at this point, I’ve played 25 games and have a win percentage of…get this…100!

Zippitee do dah!

gtcover19smYes, indeedy, I’m working on them at last. The Groundties cover was the farthest along, so it’s the first one “done.” I’m still refining the printout to get it to look on paper the way it looks on my computer, but that’s just a matter of juggling options. Read the rest of this entry »

by the wonderful folks who enjoy reading my stories. Clever, witty, generous…you’re all those things and more.

We had a great sampling  of those wonderful people at Shejicon this weekend, including one of the best behaved little junior-fen it’s ever been my pleasure to be around. I got no pictures—I was too busy having fun—but I’d be happy to post a few if some of you who were snapping away want to send them to me.

This isn’t really a convention, for all the name sounds like one. It’s a gathering of internet friends, people who have gotten to know one another through Carolyn’s work and had their friendships go well beyond fandom, who get together and do things like the canoe trip, wine tasting and figure skating. My only regret this year was that the wine tasting was scheduled right before the skating and the World’s Greatest Coach made me promise not to do both. So…I went on the wine-tasting trip on account of because it was a lot better opportunity to get to know the folks from out of town.

The canoe trip was great…it helped a lot actually getting the instruction spiel before setting out! I think Carolyn and I will be fine doing it together next time. Due to road construction, it was shorter than before, but also hotter. Fortunately, the river itself is pleasantly icy and keeps it cooler while you’re on the water. We got off the river before it got tooooo toasty outside. And we’ve decided the backyard party oasis is much more suited to evening dining…at least in July. Friday’s pizza party was great, being after 7:00. Sunday’s midday BBQ was also great fun, but hot. Fortunately, we did get a bit of a breeze to cool us down…not to mention the water pistols.

Ah, yes. Water pistols, bubble sabers…and space shuttles. What more can you ask?

How ’bout a statue and posters of Captain Jack Sparrow? Oh…yeah!

Thanks again to everyone involved, those who came and those who could only make it in spirit (or on a cell phone). You made it a weekend I’ll never forget.

when your cat freaks out because the house is too clean.

Poor Efanor. He’s been bouncing off the walls. He’s sure things are disappearing because they’re going into the boxes that are disappearing out the door. I don’t know how to tell him that the boxes are empty and things are just being put away. But for us, it’s so nice to actually be living in a home rather than a storage unit.

Going to try something new. I think I’ve got the gallery thing worked out. Something was screwball in my Next Gen installation. I think I’ve got it right now. Let’s hope. Here are some pix I took this morning of light on dewdrops and a few of the lucky troll paying a visit to the pond. Read the rest of this entry »

By a Hewlett Packard. And it’s sooooo cute! It was a quick ship and a much better deal than the same machine custom built. It’s a lot of machine for under $1000.00.

Arbor

6:30 this AM I was out in the garage working on the arch…. Read the rest of this entry »

And half an arbor.

I’m so far behind. I’m sorry. After the Green Event, I was pretty depressed. I kept plugging and Carolyn humored me through a serious crisis yesterday…but I got the mural done enough to move on, at least temporarily. I was going to take a couple more days, but the World’s Greatest Figure Skating Coach loaned us her slave guy to move dirt today and we weren’t about to turn down the offer. So…I finished the mural enough that it won’t drive me crazy, we pounded in the standoff boards (exceedingly therapudic, whaling away two handed with a heavy hammer … sorry we don’t have pix!) and began moving dirt. Mostly Buzz moved and we arranged. It was great!

Then, we began to put together the arbor. Predictably, there were Interesting Moments. Read the rest of this entry »
