Good news and bad news. Cooling off did nothing. Attaching another monitor was successful, but it was an old monitor, not an lcd and I think the video card accesses it differently, so I’m not sure that tells us it’s all in the screen or cable. An attempt to find instructions for disassembling the Qosmio G15 were completely unsuccessful. The F15 is similar, but not enough, and since access to the cable requires a complete disassembly of the machine, I hit a point past which I was hesitant to go. So I haven’t been able to get at the video cable to see if it’s loose/compromised.
What makes me even more frustrated…in my attempts to find the above, I came across the information that what Toshiba told the stores back in 2006 was to give the customers the option of a replacement machine! The G15 and F15 had known mobo issues. The now defunct CompUSA just gave me a new board and wished me luck. The other mobo took out the screen, too. I’ve used this machine sparingly in the past couple of years because I wanted it for my graphics machine, and now, it’s dying again. Crud. Had CompUSA been ethical back when, I wouldn’t have these problems now.
Oh, well. I think next I’m going to Toshiba itself and see what I might be able to get from them, tho I doubt, after this long, that it’ll be anything, and I can’t blame them for that.
I think I need some more lime…
Thanks, everyone

Jane,
The worst compy troubles we ever had, we had with CompUSA. Oh, the Tales of Woe we could tell, & I know we weren’t the only ones. No wonder they went out of business!
No kidding. I’d had such great luck with Toshis over the years, I figured I couldn’t really go wrong. CompUSA had a good deal on one…it went belly up. So badly, they gave me a total refund to put toward any machine in the building. That was how I got my Qosmio, and we all know how well THAT one went.
I might just try an HP next time, but I hope to squeeze another year out of these two. I can still use the Qosmio for graphics work. I’m sure the card will die eventually and it’ll make a great doorstop, but for now…
You have a lot more patience with them than I do J. I hope you solve it!
Reading a new book by physicist John Moffat, called Reinventing Gravity, I think it’s up your alley.
Oooo….I’ll look it up! Not sure I have patience, I just want to get as much out of them as I can. :D
At lunch we would amuse ourselves sometimes by stopping by CompUSA (Taco Bell next door heh) and asking the computer techs questions just to see what kind of answer they’d make up, since most of them had no idea what they were doing, then laugh the rest of the day about it. A little mean spirited, I know. :)
Yeah, see if Toshiba has anything to say. Sounds like either the display or the adapter are hosed and in either case it’s not a good idea to spend money on out of warranty repair (unless they’d supply the parts free). I’d see if Toshiba will tell you how to get inside it too so you can at least check for loose connections. Probably not that but worth a try before spending money.
Hee hee…We have to get our giggles some time. I’m not a whiz, but even I tripped them up all the time. It was pretty frustrating having to take the machines to them to fix, because of the warrantee, then having to tell them how to diagnose the problem!
Ah, well. They’re gone now. And I’ve got you all to help me!
