Now, is Tinkaboutit going to be jealous of Pukishu?
Stretching like you, Mom! Oh, to be young and flexible again.
Looks like am going to have to order those hands after all. I never thought they could be used by one doll.
CONGRATULATIONS ON GETTING HIM HOME!
Looking forward to the box opening, when you find the time to put it together. Write first!
Yes, if you let dolly time interfere with writing they’re going to lynch Onna and me!
I checked the Colin and Doll Chateau search on Flickr. Huh, very interesting. But he looks a lot different than I’d expected from the other photos. The proportions are…well, they seem “weird” to me. I mean, very elongated and thin, with a large head. (I was a skinny beanpole sort of kid.) But the proportions for Colin are…stretched out a lot. I suppose that enters into the fantasy character realm of it. What I think appealed to me in your photos was the side view, the head and upper torso, while riding, and the outfit masked the body proportions. Several of the Flickr photos show a very “sleepy eyed” or narrowed gaze, an Asian artistic metaphor for various emotions or personality types. Others show a more “awake” or wide-eyed look. I’m learning. (Er, and yes, costuming and lack of costuming was interesting too, lol.)
BCS – Yes, Doll Chateau (DC) is a very, very out there aesthetic, even for BJDs, and has only been around for a few years. The narrow eyed thing is a hallmark of theirs.
One thing about the clothes… the main reason that supermodels are so darned thin is to make the clothes look ‘good’. Resin doesn’t squish and most fabrics are so thick in scale it’s like a shirt or dress on a doll is made of upholstery fabric…bulky. Seriously, take any fabric you’re going to use and fold it into 4 layers for its equivalent to a 1/4 scale BJD. So, while we make allowances, visually, on the clothing scale and details, their bodies are made a bit on the skinny side and their heads are oversized both due to the Anime influence and to look decent against the clothing. DC just took the skinny to a whole new level!
Resinsoul/Bobobie used to have the skinniest dolls until DC started. Now the RS/BBB dolls look positively robust!
I went just now and looked at the site and…in all honesty, I find the site more disturbing than the actual sculpts. I know how hard it is to keep a slim look with all those seams…Wiishu is downright chunky for a BJD…but that’s not what they’re doing, at least to my eye. Those limbs are anorexic, not slim, and the actual face sculpts are really lovely, but the faceups are made to look as wasted and haggard as possible.
Far be it from me to judge the people who like them… I know wasting bodies are considered really romantic by some, and I do actually really like the face sculpts… but I find the overall site really disturbing in the aesthetic it promotes.
As far as the seams are concerned…that can be dealt with, since the seams are actually under very little day to day stress you can clip heck out of them and touch them with fray-check. By far the greater problem IMO is finding fabric that will drape at these sizes. I have a feeling Rayon is going to become my best friend!
Jane, it really is an ‘out there’ aesthetic, and I wouldn’t have any of them except in my little dolly universe they ARE aliens and that’s their natural physique.
As I say, the dolls by themselves don’t bother me, it’s the dolls combined with way they’re doing the faceups and other presentation that bother me.
I want to take the Colin doll and turn him into a Guy! Srsly, that faceup looks like it would lend itself to a cape and the hat and the mask… and a rapier.
I like the little clasped hands. They’re a little tricksey to put on…you have to twist the wrist joint on the second hand to get the tabs aligned, but I’m always tickled when I find a new way to use them, just because they are so different!
I’m working on the edits every day! Honest I am! Doll time is after I knock off. What’s not getting done (again) is housework. I still haven’t put Christmas away. But I’m really going to have to buckle down and get the covers done. I so want this backlog out. It’s hard to stay focused when it’s all old stuff. OTOH, I found a time nest of snakes in UpLink that I’m very glad to have caught. I fixed it, but it took a couple of days to figure out how!
Joe…No kidding. I used to be insanely flexible for someone who only worked at it intermittently. One of the reasons, I suspect, that I have back and hip problems now.
Tink’s pretty laid back…and he’s not particularly cuddly. Little Pukishu curls up quite nicely in his big bro’s arms. This is how I found them this AM
Heh, awww. — I notice there’s been a sudden and distinct change from Wiishu’s previous attitude. Good goin’, Wiishu. You’re lucky. Glad you’ve got a new little bro.
He was trying so hard to be good, and in the end, it’s paid off. It’s going to take me a long time to get the events of Day 1 organized and posted, but they had quite the introduction. Suffice to say, he was very humbled when he saw the size of little Pukishu’s robe. He hadn’t realized how tiny his little bro was going to be.
Fortunately, there is enough spice in the mix that they’ll have their brotherly tiffs to keep things from getting tooooo saccharin.
So has Little Brother been named yet? or is that to come (when he informs you)?
He doesn’t speak, yet. It’s one of Wiishu’s duties to teach him to talk “people”…along with the guitar. So far…attempts at both are…painful. Amazing how loud such a tiny thing can be!
BTW…he obviously plays guitar with a pick (you’ll see why when you see his guitar-hands. :D) Wiishu’s been calling him Pukishu. I’m hoping it doesn’t stick. I’m already notorious as the most unoriginal namer in the history of namers…sigh…
Altho, I suppose it could indicate a family name….
I love the sleeping faceplates! I’m going to have to get the magnets in all the faceplates, the amount that I’m changing them.
Don’t use ‘em Jane! That causes all sorts of issues. It’s much better to put a tiny bit of hot glue on the spots that have worn a bit. Then they stay on good as new!
Gotcha. What issues?
If you put one in backwards (they’re so tiny) then you have to figure a way to pry it out without damaging the part it’s attached to. And, though it’s highly unlikely in your case, if you decided to sell off a part with an optional magnet installed, you’d have a hard sell because you never know what polarity ANOTHER person has set on their doll. Fairyland is absolutely consistent with their magnet installation. You can’t put a left hand on a right arm OR leg and vice-versa. Their head and shoulder magnets are the same way, which is a bother since sometimes you’d LIKE the freedom of switching add on bits to the opposite side.
Ah! makes sense. I personally love the polarity of the hands, since it does make it impossible to put a hand on backwards, however the point about resale is valid. At this time, I can’t imagine selling any of my kids, but realistically, I know that can change. And right now, it’s not an issue. It’s also a problem that the holes are too small for the magnets! One has the tools to sand it open, but one has plenty else to do first!
I use a tiny dab of eye putty because I don’t have a glue gun.
I am not familiar with the issues dhawktx mentioned. I await to be enlightened.
o-O No glue gun? *gasp!*
If I can find one of my extra three or four that are hiding I’ll bring it to you at the workmeet this weekend.
I have to admit, facile as I am with most tools and art/craft type things, glue guns elude me…possibly because I’ve probably spent a TOTAL in my lifetime of two hours with one in my hand, let alone actually using it!
Wiishu’s sueding was not the most successful operation I’ve ever done. It does what it needs to do, but you see the glue up in the joint.
I need to actually see one done properly.
I bought a low-temp glue gun years ago. I brought it home and it immediately got swallowed by the Chaos Cave.
I CAN put my hands on my awesome regular glue gun that has a holster plug-in so I can take it out of the holder and work free of the power cable. That thing is ancient.
Good thing you got those sleeping faceplates so you could have a bit of peace!

Of course, he can declare his name later, and tell Wiishu to stop calling him Pukishu.
As an old Dragonball Z fan, a lot of my dolls have food, plants or condiment names, which makes it fun to find out about foods of the world.
Heavenly bodies and SF characters also have interesting names. Moon? Comet? Crater?
If you think he may be distantly related to my Talon (Takeo Tanjiro) and his sister Lani (Takeo Yumiko), they have full Japanese names but go by their nicknames. Perhaps Yamata? Yuki? Yukishu? He IS pale!
Or maybe he is some other kind of Sidhe or member of the Seelie Court, such as a Pixie or a Sprite. Puck? Puckishu? PixiePuck?
Or maybe a place name, like Devon, Osaka or Bahama?
I think he’s probably going to do just that, once he gets verbal.
I have to admit to a fondness for Pookie, as an old Garfield fan….PookieShu is a possibility….Which isn’t a real change, but is probably why Wiishu’s mistake rings pleasantly in my head.
I have a soft spot for Pilikia, having known a couple of cats by that moniker, one of whom was an exceptional mouser and scrapper. However, you may want to be careful what you call him, as names like that tend to take on attributes.
He’s still very young. Right now, like a kitten, he spends most of his time napping and when he’s not napping, he exploring and then getting lost when he falls asleep. Wiishu is spending most of his waking time looking for the little guy to make sure he hasn’t gotten stepped on!
Posing him is intrustin’. His body language is just starting to speak to me.
Check out this beautiful Beast!
http://dollsoom.com/eng/shop/item.php?it_id=1358330430
I’m really really really sorry to write this, because I SOOOOOO want to love this… but I also need to vent and this is the only place I can really do it.
I have to admit…I checked this out with all kinds of anticipation, fully expecting to find an irresistible temptation to go into debt for the next year. B&B is my all-time favorite fairy tale…in all its incarnations, including Cupid and Psyche. Stevie’s totem is a stag, so when I heard it was based on a deer, I was double excited… and except for the necklace and the human face, which I love…I was underwhelmed.
The beast is milquetoast. He looks more like a plushie goat than a stag. His features are soft and uncommitted, the eyes bearing none of the liquid appeal and intensity of a stag at alert. They s/b larger. More open…with something between a smize and a scowl. The hands look like those floppy latex things in a B-grade movie. The Beast is frightening. Intense. And he’s a plushie in a bad nightgown. I love love love the necklace and the concept, but the execution really leaves too much to be desired, IMO. Sure, I could get him and mod him to my liking, but that’s a lot of money to pay for a round tuit.
I just took five minutes with the warp brush to try to give you an idea how I would mod it. Oh…the ears should also be rotated forward. These are in defensive mode and Beast s/b in command. I did them a bit here, but they really s/b full forward, alert and/or aggressive. And as I look at it, if you’re doing a deer, do full stag antlers, not these horns that look like a mountain goat’s put on backwards. Also, his head needs to be weighted so he can, if you want, lift his head so that he looks down his nose rather than always with his chin dipped in embarrassment. I don’t know if he can do that, but they didn’t give us an example of it, if he can.
I haven’t looked — would you have to sculpt the stag horns, or is a proper rack available as a regular accoutrement for BJD? Balance would be tricky, but I like the notion of making the Beast look very Green Man.
The problem with horns on BJDs is that they are generally (but not always) magnetic and a full rack simply won’t stay on – the resin’s too heavy for the magnets.
If they mold the rack as part of the head, that gets pricey as there are more dud castings (waste) and most folks are too lazy to take the head off to dress the doll.
I have a tiny deer boy with a giant rack that should be on a large doll, not him.
I bought him a tiny rack and the magnets are turned around so he can’t wear them. I doubt I can get the magnet out of such a tiny hole, too.
It’s okay not to like the doll – that’s why there’s so many companies doing different aesthetics!
I like him as a character but not the Beast. Not remotely the Beast to me. He would belong in my alien group of dolls. I saw hints of CJ’s Kif in him, due to the snout and Whelan’s art, but definitely not the attitude or the brutality! This is a gentle creature, not something wild. I see him as a diplomat to his planet, in robes of state.
That works!
And as I say…I love the human head. If I had the $$ I’d get it just for that and mod heck out of the beast.
Onna-san, I’m polish and it’s first time ever I heard we call cat ‘gatto’… Cat in polish: kot, kota, kotka, kicia, kociatko, kociak…
I found the info on a website so I’m not an expert at all.
I really liked Michael Whelan’s *and* David Cherry’s covers for the Chanur books. The kif looked that way, only much darker, in my imagination.
I remember the 80′s Beauty and the Beast TV series, but I don’t think I saw an episode, just Starlog articles. The stills of (Ron Perlman?) as the Beast were great. But hmm, I think I’d think up something different for the Beast than anything I’ve seen. That’s a tough one, good challenge to the artist’s imagination.
Most sculpts are a bit bland, IMHO, since they are intended to be blank canvases for the owner to bring to life, even the ones with the factory blushing. They have to be able to sell a minimum number of castings of each sculpt or they lose money. And if it’s a good one, they have to sell them before the knockoffs hit the market.
I admit, I know that, and re: the knockoffs…I wish the entire world would stop looking to China for cheap production and force it to respect foreign copyright in all things. That’s the root of the problem for books, anime, and most other knockoffs. There’s no way to go after them because in China, it’s not illegal. You can only go after the US distributors and they’re a hydra.
Re this particular sculpt… I should have kept my mouth shut. It’s just that everyone was raving about him and I went to look and instead of proud stag I saw castrated goat in a stupid nightshirt with an ugly ruffle that petered out around his crotch, and it was a real disappointment. Usually these special editions are gorgeous with beautiful clothing and this…especially that shirt…was just so not worth the price of admission.
IMO!!! always in my opinion.
And one thing I cannot be accused of is mainstream taste! If I had that, I’d be writing best sellers!
Never keep your mouth shut!
“instead of proud stag I saw castrated goat in a stupid nightshirt with an ugly ruffle that petered out around his crotch.” Are there a couple of tongue-in-cheek references there, dear?
ARRRRGH! Not intentional.
Hahahah! I’m glad it wasn’t just me  …. I thought it was kinda funny.
Er, and my subconscious plays tricks with me like that too. Definitely more going on there below the civilized surface.
Not a bad thing, mind you.
As long as it’s not reality TV, we’re good….
