OK…for copyright reasons, I’ve killed these links. My profound apologies to the copyright holders.

Thanks for all who helped. Now…gotta find legit fonts.

Harmonies with fonts

Harmonies w/o fonts

I’ve got two files up there from a cleaned up html base. I’m hoping this will help with the goofy formatting.

If you have problems with the file with fonts, please try the one without.

I can’t thank youse guys enuf.

Big hugs

I took a quick look at both. Seems to be in order using firefox epub reader.

Under no circumstances should Carolyn buy any of those shoes….

  • On my Mac running MacOS 10.6.3, and using the “avec fonts” version, here’s the results:

    * Sigil v0.1.9: looks great, TOC works, fonts work, “Acoma station— five minutes” is in Bank Gothic

    * Calibre v0.6.47 reader: looks great, TOC works, fonts work, “Acoma station— five minutes” is in Bank Gothic. (the character leading looks better on Sigil, though, but that seems true in general)

    * epubreader plugin for FireFox: looks great, TOC works, fonts work, but “Acoma station— five minutes” looks like Helvetica or some such

    * Stanza for Mac Desktop v1.0 Beta 18: looks awful, no fonts, no font faces, no TOC, no images, but this is usual for Stanza Desktop.

    * Stanza on iPhone v2.1.1: looks great, TOC works, fonts work, but “Acoma station— five minutes” looks like Helvetica or some such

    I hope this helps!

  • Yay! We’re making headway!

I hate to ask…does the one without fonts work on the Stanza?

I wonder why the Bank Gothic doesn’t work…It might just be too weird. I love the font but maybe I should go with something else. So long as it’s still readable!

    Thanks so much!!!!!

  • Nope, the “sans fonts” one is just as messed up with Stanza Desktop; in fact, it looks identical to the font-y version. But Stanza Desktop just simply doesn’t work, at least not on the Mac, not with any epub file I’ve tried.

The Bank Gothic looks great when it works (it’s a great font!) And when it doesn’t work, it showing up as Helvetica or a Helvetica-like sans-serif font, which still looks good as a computer display, etc. So I’m not sure that there’s any problem with using it, since it’ll work some of the time and the alternatives are probably no more interesting that the default “fallback” font. I’m happy to test alternatives, though: trust me, I am taking notes for my own attempts at epub-ery!

  • Well…I guess we can look at it this way. Theoretically, it SHOULD look the same if the reader can’t handle embedded fonts! 😆 😆 😆

In all honesty, I’m doing a lot of this “in public” as twere so that people who are interested in epub-ery (love that word) will have an idea what to look for. It’s a reeeeaaaallllyy tricky conversion.

One thing I’ve decided…in the initial html, if it’s the least bit extraneous…dump it!
